Jamaal Charles suffers ankle injury

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and safety Eric Berry both suffered ankle injuries in the first half of Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos, and none of the star players return.

Charles stopped on a run up the middle early in the first quarter and then limped to the bench. He was examined by the medical staff as Chiefs Knile Davis replaced him in the backfield.

Kansas City Charles was trying to get more involved in the offense this week after giving it just seven carries against Tennessee. Charles rushed for 1,287 yards last season, which was the third most in the NFL.

Berry looked on the bench for the medical staff at the end of the second quarter, before taking his ankle tape and headed for the locker room. He was replaced by Ron Parker.

The Chiefs lost three starters for the season with injuries in the game last week. Linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive end Mike DeVito each broken Achilles tendon, while offensive lineman Jeff Allen injured elbow.
