the fourteenth 100-yard game of Murray's career

With a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter, DeMarco Murray became the first runner in NFL history to open a season with seven consecutive 100-yard games.

Previously, Hall of Famer Jim Brown opened the 1958 season with six consecutive 100-yard games for the Cleveland Browns.

Murray came into Sunday's game against the New York Giants on track to more than 2,000 meters and 424 carries, which would be a record for a season.

However, given his injury history, the Cowboys have spoken to limit some of their workload. He missed 11 games in his first three seasons in the ankle, knee and foot injuries. He appeared to hurt his right ankle in a 21-yard gain late in the second quarter and did not appear in the final series of the first half Cowboys.

Murray leads the NFL in rushing, and trying to become the first cowboy to lead the league in rushing since Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, who had 1,773 yards in 1995, Smith had 812 yards in the first seven games season.

Eagles' win over Giants

McCoy recaptured vintage 2013 form, making sharp cuts and slipping tacklers in tight spaces while averaging roughly 7.0 yards per carry. By the start of the fourth quarter, McCoy had 144 yards from scrimmage compared to 136 for the entire Giants offense. There's nothing wrong with his game.

Whatever fight was left in the Giants, down 20-0 in the third quarter, seemed to fade when Victor Cruz went down with a torn patellar tendon while attempting to catch a fourth-down touchdown pass. Cruz immediately realized that his season was over and broke down in tears on the golf cart to the locker room. With backup slot receiver Jerrel Jernigan also done for the season, Preston Parker is likely to take over in the slot, with Odell Beckham and Rueben Randle on the outside.

Darren Sproles was forced from the game late in the third quarter with a knee injury of his own. Per sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, Sproles was unhappy with the results when the Eagles' staff tested the stability of his left knee. He walked to the locker room, never to return.

Despite a pair of interceptions that extended his NFL turnover lead, Nick Foles clearly outplayed the opposing quarterback for the first time this season. He can thank his beleaguered offensive line for taking only one hit all night.

Whereas the Eagles' blocking was significantly improved, the Giants' offensive line lost the battle in the trenches. Connor Barwin and Vinny Curry combined for five sacks, as right tackle Justin Pugh had a particularly rough evening. By the second half, Eli Manning's footwork was noticeably affected by the pressure.

Riding a three-game winning streak with rookie Odell Beckham giving the offense a lift and Jason Pierre-Paul leading a frisky defense, the Giants entered the game with reason to believe they were rounding into the NFC East's best team. After the Cowboys' upset victory in Seattle and the Giants' blowout defeat in Philadelphia, they now have the look of an outfit that will hover around the .500 mark all season. The loss of Manning's favorite receiver could be a difference-maker.

Georgia Todd Gurley suspended indefinitely

Georgia running back Todd Gurley suspended from competition indefinitely, according to a press release from UGA.

The decision stems from an ongoing investigation into an alleged violation of NCAA rules, UGA said.

"Obviously I'm very disappointed," coach Mark Richt UGA. "The important thing for our team is to turn our attention to the preparation of Missouri."

Georgia plays at Missouri on Saturday at noon.

In five games this season, Gurley, regarded by many as one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy, gained 773 yards on 94 carries, averaging 8.2 yards per carry and has eight rushing touchdowns.

Gurley is third best receiver for the Bulldogs with 11 catches, and last week against Vanderbilt completed a 50-yard pass.

Chiefs end four-game losing streak

Charles returned from injury to score three touchdowns Monday night, Brady was intercepted twice by the opportunist leaders, and Kansas City beat New England 41-14 in hand, Bill Belichick, one of his worst loss as coach of the Patriots.

Charles victory last week in Miami missed with a sprained ankle, rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown. The Pro Bowl running back also caught two touchdown passes short of Alex Smith, who had 248 yards and three touchdowns in a sustained performance before a raucous crowd.

The Chiefs (2-2) ended a four-game skid at Arrowhead Stadium since last season with the delivery of the Patriots (2-2) their worst loss since losing to San Diego 41-17 in 2005.

Along with throwing two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, Brady was strip-sacked by Tamba Hali to step up a field goal. Brady finished 14 of 23 for 159 yards.

The Chiefs forced the Patriots to air by stuffing Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley. And when Brady dropped back, his front seven ran roughshod over their suspect offensive line.

Hardly helped the Patriots offense, which was trying to operate on the same night Chiefs fans were trying to retrieve the record for the highest place of outdoor sports. The record was set in the first half, when Guinness World Records recorded a noise level of 142.2 decibels - breaking the mark of 137.6 that fans of the Seattle Seahawks had since last season.

The crowd included several members of the Kansas City Royals, who made the trek across the parking Kauffman Stadium to see the match on the bench. The Royals play their first playoff game since 1985 against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

Knile Davis finished with 107 yards rushing for Kansas City. Tight end Travis Kelce had eight catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Charles gave the Chiefs an early lead with his first-quarter touchdown drop, and then the lead with a TD catch for 5 yards in the second quarter widened.

Cairo Santos added a field goal from 22 yards just before halftime for a 17-0 lead.

The field goal came after the Chiefs were rescued by a defensive penalty. They were arrested a short pass play with 8 seconds left, but the penalty gave them a second chance.

Kansas City had 303 yards of offense in the first half, the most against any Belichick-coached team.

Charles scored his third touchdown of the game early in the second half, taking a short pass in the flat and stumble into the end zone. He appeared to grab his hamstring in the road and met with the coaches as he left the field. After a brief trip to the locker room, Charles recorded a few more carries before his night was done.

At that time, the game was pretty much done, too.

Brady threw a touchdown pass of 44 yards in the third quarter to Brandon LaFell, who slipped the reach of cornerback Marcus Cooper to reach the end zone. But he was intercepted by Husain Abdullah later in the middle, and Abdullah returned the interception 39 yards for a touchdown.

Cowboys big win over Saints

After years serving as the face of mediocrity in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys may be ready to take on a new identity this season: Surprise playoff contender.

Tony Romo threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns and DeMarco Murray ran for 149 yards and two scores in a 38-17 win over the visiting New Orleans Saints on Sunday night. The Cowboys (3-1) have won three straight to move into a tie with the Philadelphia Eagles atop the NFC East at the season's quarter pole.

The Cowboys set the tone early. Romo -- dodging defenders and looking a lot more like the guy we remember pre-back surgery -- moved the Cowboys down the field on the opening possession, capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams. The 12-play, 80-yard drive chewed up over seven minutes of the clock. Controlling time of possession was a theme of the night for the Cowboys.

Romo played mistake-free football and Williams added a second touchdown reception, but Dallas' biggest offensive star remains Murray. The running back -- comfortably ahead in the NFL rushing race -- went over 100 yards for the fourth consecutive game. Murray's second touchdown was the backbreaker, a 28-yard burst that put Dallas up 31-3 in the third quarter.

Credit also goes to a Dallas defense the football world considered radioactively putrid entering the season. The Saints couldn't get anything going against Rod Marinelli's unit until the fourth quarter. That allowed the Cowboys to build a lead at the expense of Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who we imagine didn't have the Big D homecoming he'd envisioned.

After the Cowboys had built a four touchdown lead, NBC cameras captured a shot of Jerry Jones in his box, grinning ear to ear. His good mood was understandable. Nobody took the Cowboys seriously back in August. As we reach October, they've got our attention.

Vikings get win but Teddy Bridgewater injures ankle

The rookie quarterback was carted to the locker room with a sprained left ankle in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 41-28 victory against the Atlanta Falcons.

Bridgewater, who appeared to suffer the injury on a fourth-quarter scramble attempt, was diagnosed with a sprain after X-rays on the ankle were negative. He returned to the Vikings' sideline shortly later and was not wearing a cast.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Bridgewater will undergo an MRI but also claimed that he assumes the rookie will play in Thursday night's game against Green Bay.

Third-string quarterback Christian Ponder -- who was only active for the first time this year after Matt Cassel broke his foot last week against New Orleans -- finished Sunday's game in place of Bridgewater.

Before the injury, Bridgewater completed 19 of 30 passes for 317 yards, also running for a touchdown as the Vikings piled up more than 500 yards of offense and took a 38-28 lead.

Ponder, who lost the starting job this season after being taken 12th overall in the 2011 draft, could become the third Vikings quarterback to start a game in the first five weeks of the season if Bridgewater isn't able to play Thursday night.

Rivers threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns, two to Eddie Royal, and the San Diego Chargers returned a scare early Bortles and winless Jacksonville Jaguars for a 33-14 victory Sunday.

It was the fifth straight game the Jaguars lost by double digits dating from the end of last season. They have been outscored 152-58 this season.

Although the Chargers looked out of sync at times, Rivers helped keep it together.

After Toby Gerhart gave Jacksonville a 7-3 advantage on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter - the first TD rushing Jaguars from November 24 - that Rivers and the Chargers took just five plays to answer. Rivers noted linebacker Geno Hayes covering Royal, who got wide open for a 47-yard reception to put San Diego up 10-7.
